The annual registration for the upcoming school year opens on Monday Jan 12 for the CBE.  Due to the high volume of students in some areas it is important to review registration deadlines for Kindergarten registration and lottery.

To find your school new functionality on the CBE website makes it much easier.  Use the 'Find a School' feature to select by area or program. If you select the school name in the results list it will give you an indication of enrollment and any overflow designation notices.

If you are looking for information regarding the many schools under construction, details including initial site maps and information are found on the School Projects list.

Information is also available regarding registration with the Calgary Catholic School Board.  If you were hoping to register with local charter schools please do contact them individually as many have very extensive waiting lists.

As school information is so fluid, this information overrides all previously provided school information.

In the recent weeks and late in 2013 a number of announcements have been made by the Province of Alberta regarding the development of new schools and modernization or update or others.

The full list updated by the Province with future announcements can be found here: New School Capital Projects

I have just copied the announcements as of today's date. The volume of listings illustrates the major need for new school space. I spoke with another family just this weekend that is potentially delaying plans to move due to lack of school space in their preferred neighbourhood.  As the capacity issues are just coming to light in some areas this is a shock to many folks. School lotteries in capacity schools were held mid February.

These are the announcements for Calgary so far. I didn't include the Modular Classroom Allocations or Modernizations as there are too many.

A new family moves to Calgary and innocently asks, "What are the best schools in the city and what is available to purchase within walking distance." The answer is a long one and it usually starts with 'It depends...."

Schools. One of the most important criteria for some families when choosing a community or property to call home.

Sometimes it is parents looking for a specific program or philosophy and sometimes it is all about the logistics of getting our children to school and home safely while still working or attending to our other activities.

It used to be easier I am told. Children in a community would go to the school in that community, often within walking distance. Some communities had before and after school care. It's not that easy now.

In some communities the choice to attend the local designated school is thwarted by full enrollments, alternate school assignments, bus schedules and lotteries for school space. Parents are scrambling to find before and after school care or changing their plans regarding work and availability.

Some inner city locations have low enrollments while outlying areas are bursting at the seams. The current baby boom, Calgary's large growth numbers, funding and timeliness of construction of new infrastructure all contribute. Affordability of housing, access to backyards and playgrounds, parks and amenities fuels the move within the city as well.

Recently the province announced more schools in 2013 with $1.4B allocated over 3 years to school capital projects. I'll leave the 'how can you build that many schools so fast given the shortage of folks to build them' to someone else and instead say, "That's great. What's the plan for the when and where?"

Calgary Board of Education schools and Calgary Catholic schools also offer french immersion, language schools and specialized programs on top of everything else. Charter schools enter the mix providing unique learning opportunities geared towards various streams including science, arts, girls only, academics, inquiry based and others. Charter schools are unique to Alberta and the waitlists are huge so they must be doing something right. On top of that are the private schools adding another layer of option.

So as you are looking at new homes, you need to remember that just because you see a school doesn't mean your children can attend. It's kinda nutty given the perceived options. Research is critical if schools are a top priority.

I should have listened to my neighbour and enrolled my kids when they were born.

2013 - 2014 - School calendars are posted on the school websites for your planning and logistics.

Details for Tuscany:

Just going through this makes me realize how many children Tuscany has and how many designated schools we visit due to our sheer numbers and grade adjustments between schools. Nutty.

Today parents of children that attend Tuscany School received an important notice regarding the designation of schools for future enrollment as Tuscany School has reached capacity.  Future enrollment may see some Tuscany children enrolling in W.O. Mitchell in Silver Springs.

A few months ago Royal Oak Elementary managed the same challenge in a different way by instituting a lottery system to determine enrollment.

Parents often ask me about schools, designations and areas and with so many changes in our growing communities it is unexpected when some change are announced. Most recently prior to this, the designated areas for NW High School were announced differently than the previously published designations.

If you have strong feelings about which school your child will attend, please consult the Calgary Board of Education website at www.cbe.ab.ca or contact the area offices for detailed information about your school options. The CBE website also provides the future capital plan, enrollment surveys and more. We are looking forward to hearing when the next phase of schools for development will be announced as per the capital plan. More Information.

It snuck up on me this year, but just around the corner starting Jan 10 for Calgary Public Schools (and earlier for some) is Kindergarden registration across the city.

For more information visit:

There are many school and program options available to parents including public, catholic and private school programs. If you are considering moving across neighbourhoods be sure to check out registration options, timelines and requirements (such as community residency proof).

Driving down Nose Hill Drive south from Country Hills to Crowfoot, you may or may not have noticed the construction on the west side just north of John Laurie Blvd.

What is it you wonder?

It is the North West High School currently under construction at 8777 Nose Hill Drive NW.

NW High School is expected to be open for the 2013-2014 school year. Serving students in grades 10-12 the school will have an opening capacity of 1500 students. The high school will accommodate students from Citadel, Arbour Lake, Scenic Acres, Ranchlands, Hawkwood and Tuscany. Residents from Rocky Ridge and Royal Oak have also been engaged about the possibility of accommodating students from those areas as well.

With schools at capacity in the very popular NW communities, this is a very welcome school development.

Many of my clients have children. The baby boom in Calgary in recent years has resulted in many little munchkins and those munchkins will soon be or are just starting school.

With some schools at capacity, parents are working hard to choose homes in catchment for the schools they prefer. When consulting with buyers as they search for a new home one of the items on their list is often 'close to a good school'.  The difficulty for me is what does 'good school' mean to you? With many different options regarding schools including public, catholic, charter, francophone and private and with the Calgary School Board working hard to provide options to parents, I find this one just plain hard to answer for folks.

Instead, what I can do is provide buyers with the information to make the best choice for them.
Below are a few resource to help you decide the best school for your little munchkins.
